I wonder how many brick and mortar establishments even understand what an auto responder is? I have been to restaurants here in the states that ask for and collect your email address and then will send out free or discounted coupons to their establishment in order to get a previous customer back. And, I agree that it is easier to keep the customer that you already have...than it is to get a new customer.
